Introduction
St John’s Institute of Dermatology is the largest clinical dermatology department in the UK, and an internationally-recognised centre of excellence in education and research into skin disease. The St John’s Institute is also a renowned postgraduate training centre in dermatology for dermatologists and other health professionals from all over the world.
The St John’s DermAcademy coordinates an educational initiative, called an observership (or Visiting Professional Programme (VPP)) for international doctors, researchers, and other healthcare professionals who wish to observe specific areas of clinical care in our department. These customized educational programs facilitate knowledge sharing and expertise in clinical care, as well as quality and innovation in healthcare.
Overview
Observerships may range from 1 week to three months. A typical weekly schedule will include attendance at dermatology outpatient clinics, attendance at the weekly St. John’s Grand Round (with live cases viewing followed by case discussion) and attendance at the weekly Tuesday lunchtime dermatology trainee teaching.

Where possible, we will try to facilitate your preference regarding dermatology specialist clinics, however we cannot always guarantee specific clinic availability.
Terms of the Observership
The observership program is designed for currently practicing clinicians and is not suitable for medical students or junior doctors. Observers will not physically engage with any patients or advise on any cases. Observers will strictly be observing/shadowing our professional staff. Participation in our observership program is not equivalent to work experience and does not have any bearing on pending or future job applications or right to work in the UK. On successful completion of the observership, you will receive a certificate of attendance. Acceptance is subject to adequately passing our occupational health checks.
